Mercedes-Benz GLC: Versatile Luxury SUV
The Mercedes-Benz GLC is an ideal luxury small SUV for Virginia drivers. The GLC strikes the perfect balance between offering efficiency plus compact maneuverability. It offers enough room to sit five comfortably and have room for luggage or shopping finds. The GLC is even available in a new coupe with SUV-like styling for those who love everything the GLC SUV has to offer but prefer the styling of coupes. In addition to the two body styles, there are multiple trims, so you can customize your GLC to meet your needs.
In every case, this midsize SUV shows off its lean muscle with a long wheelbase, wide track, and big wheels that create a spacious interior. The Mercedes-Benz GLC has even been awarded for its styling, features, and safety. The GLC has everything you want for an upscale environment, including options like handcrafted designer Nappa leather, rear door sunshades, a Panorama roof, and heated seats throughout.
What’s New on the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC?
The biggest news for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC is the addition of the GLC Coupe which joins the SUV. Mercedes-Benz had already added a coupe version of the GLE- SUV, and after its success, they decided to follow suit with the GLC. The GLC Coupe is essentially a half-coupe and half-SUV model with mostly cosmetic differences. The Coupe is 3.2 inches longer as well as 1.6 inches lower than the standard version of the GLC, and its rear shape resembles that of the GLE Coupe or the S-Class Coupe. Everything else about the GLC SUV and Coupe models is nearly identical, including their underpinnings, equipment lists, and powertrains.
The new Coupe is offered as a GLC 300 or Mercedes-AMG® GLC 43, but unlike the SUV, the GLC 300 Coupe doesn’t offer rear-wheel drive; it comes standard with 4MATIC® all-wheel drive. The GLC 43 Coupe is the first GLC or GLK model to have an AMG® trim, and it has 362 horsepower from a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 as well as the sportier variation of the Mercedes-Benz air suspension. Other than the new GLC Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is mostly unchanged for the 2017 model year. There was some minor reshuffling of optional and standard features, but most of these will go unnoticed by all but the most dedicated auto enthusiasts.
History of the GLC
The Mercedes-Benz GLC only debuted for the 2016 model year, but its history goes beyond this. The GLC was designed as a replacement for the GLK and follows the new naming scheme for Mercedes-Benz that aims to minimize confusion. You will notice that all SUVs now start with a “GL” which is based on the German word for off-roading vehicles. The “C” simply indicates that the GLC is equivalent to the C-Class sedan in terms of size and luxury level.
The GLK that preceded the GLC debuted in 2008 during the Beijing Auto Show. It shows heavy influences from the C-Class, including the W204 platform. When first available, the GLK was only offered with 4MATIC® all-wheel drive, with rear-wheel drive becoming available later on. Throughout its first generation, the GLK was available with three different gas engines ranging from 228 to 302 horsepower, with diesel engines commonly found in other markets. The GLK saw a major update during the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The 2013 GLK 350 and the GLK 350 4MATIC® BlueEfficiency arrived in the United States with 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The first GLC model was offered as the GLC 300 with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 241 horsepower. The AMG® GLC 43 now offers more power for those who want it.
