How the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Was Updated

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was mostly redesigned, giving you a long list of differences that you will notice. The 2017 E-Class models show off their curves while the 2016 models were blockier. The 2017 version is also 2.6 inches longer in the wheelbase along with 1.7 inches longer overall, leading to enhanced vehicle stability and rear legroom. In addition to this increased interior space, the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class has a more organic design instead of the squared-off feeling of the 2016 models. You will even find a sweeping band with wood trim going from one side of the vehicle to the other. The 12.3-inch touchscreen mentioned above is completely new, as is the optional second one. When combined, they create a widescreen display that is unlike anything you will find in competitors.

The engine options for the E-Class are somewhat similar between the 2016 and 2017 model years, and they once again depend on the particular model you choose. The 2016 E-Class was available with a 302-horsepower V6 engine in the E 350, an E 400, or an AMG® E 63, the last of which was the most powerful. The 2017 version is available as an E 300 with the 241-horsepower 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, the E 400 with a 329-horsepower 3-liter bi-turbo V6, or the E 550 with the 402-horsepower 4.7-liter bi-turbo V8 mentioned above, all of which are new powertrains. The available suspensions on the 2017 E-Class have also expanded, now including the Air Body Control Suspension with self-leveling.

One of the areas with the most updates for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is safety. Newly standard features include Active Brake Assist, PRESAFE® Sound, and Crosswind Assist. The optional enhanced Active Brake Assist has been improved to detect cross-traffic, and you can now opt for PRESAFE® Impulse Side and Evasive Steering Assist.

Take a Look at the E-Class’s History

The predecessor to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been around since 1953, although it didn’t officially receive its name until 1984. Originally, the E stood for “Einspritzmotor,” the German word for “fuel injection engine.” As such, the first E-Class models were designed to simply mean the engines feature fuel injection, not designate a class of features. That has clearly changed throughout the years, with the E-Class referring to a group of vehicles with similar styling and amenities.

Important updates came in 1999 in the form of additional airbags, with the COMAND® system and styling revised the following year. The powerful AMG® made its debut in 2001 and for 2003, the E-Class offered a V8 and quad-zone climate control. More styling adjustments took place in 2007, and 2009 saw upgrades to the audio unit. The convertible was added for 2011, which is also when the coupe received refreshed styling. 2012 gave the E-Class more efficient powertrains, and 2014 saw minor stylistic updates.
